Under CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Meta has been scaling back its operations in response to stagnating sales and declining profits. One of its local contractors is laying off 144 people after Meta cancelled their contract.
A contractor for Meta Platforms Inc. is cutting 144 employees who worked at a facility operated by the social networking giant in Newark.
Astreya Partners LLC expects to lay off all the workers on Nov. 18, Michelle Richard, the San Jose-based company's global human resources vice president, said in a letter to state employment officials Tuesday. The job cuts are in response to a notice given to Astreya by Meta — Facebook's parent company — Richard said in the letter.
"This layoff is the result of the client's termination of services provided by Astreya employees at the (Newark) location," she said.
Representatives of Astreya and Menlo Park-based Meta did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment.
Among those whose jobs Astreya is cutting, 133 are inventory technician, according to Richard's letter. The remaining 11 hold an assortment of other positions, including project and program management, inventory management and business analysis. All worked at Meta's facility at 7300 Gateway Blvd. in Newark.
Meta (Nasdaq: META) only gave Astreya 30 days notice that it was ending their contract, so the contractor wasn't able to give employees the full, state-required 60-days notice, Richard said. In lieu of that, the company will continue to pay workers' salaries and provide their medical benefits until Dec. 18, she said.
It wasn't immediately clear what the Astreya employees were doing for Meta. The tech giant leased the Newark facility — a research-and-development space — in 2019. At the time, a company representative said in planned to locate some of its IT staff there as well as some of its augmented and virtual reality operations.
The cuts come as Meta has been dealing with a downturn in digital advertising that has led to stagnating revenue and slumping profits. In response, the company has reportedly put in place a hiring freeze and CEO Mark Zuckerberg told workers Meta will be smaller next year. The tech giant has also reportedly been quietly cutting certain teams and departments.
